The
Vivian F. Bennett Memorial Dog Park
at
Fourth
of July Park
702
W. Mountain St.
Kernersville,
NC

IT'S
OPEN!
Here
is how it all began...
Fourth
of July Park is already one of the most canine-friendly
places in Kernersville. With dogs allowed in the park
on leash, a doggie water fountain on the paved walking trail,
and two cleanup stations, it attracts many dog lovers to
the area. We want to make it even better. With
suggestions and support from citizens and our own Parks
& Recreation Advisory Board, KPRD is making a dog park
at Fourth of July Park more than a dream. In April
of 2006, the Town of Kernersville's Board of Aldermen gave
us permission to raise the estimated $13,500 that it should
cost to build the facility at that time. We met that
goal through donations, fundraisers, and grants. The
property was surveyed in October 2007 and our staff began
selective tree removal and gradework. With the cost
of construction and materials increasing since the original
proposal, we are selling bricks for $75 each to raise additional
funding. They will be placed at the entryway to create
a more beautiful gate to the dog park. If you are
interested in purchasing a brick, contact Jerri Crews at
jcrews@toknc.com
or by phone at 336-996-6421.

Pavers SOLD...only 69 more to go!!!
While
our staff was working in other areas of Fourth of July Park,
another possible site for the Vivian F. Bennett Memorial
Dog Park was identified. The Board of Aldermen decided
on May 28th, at the June briefing, to go with the new location
on the Mountain St. side of the park. The new location
is reflected in the map above and will be close to an acre
in size with large and small dog areas. The fencing
was installed during the third week of July and the grass
has been seeded. You should see our staff installing
benches, water features, and clean up stations very soon.
The Vivian F. Bennett Memorial Dog Park
is
open to the public.
THE
DOG PARK RUMMAGE SALE WAS HELD JUNE 30th, 2007
Harmon
Park, 152 S. Main
The
Kernersville Dog Park Committee collected $1,068.21 in proceeds
from this sale. The Town of Kernersville also received
another $65.00 in donations because of the sale. During
the rummage sale, the Bennett Family Children also made
a substantial donation in honor of their parents, Rev. Manly
& Vivian Bennett. The Town passed a resolution
allowing the Bennett children to name the park. Dr.
Jerry Bennett, Susan Bennett, and Brenda Bennett have decided
to name the dog park the Vivian F. Bennett Memorial Dog
Park in honor of their mother and her love of all animals.
Thanks to this rummage sale fundraiser, we were able to
secure a $1000.00 matching grant from Wal-Mart Foundation!
Kernersville
Parks & Rec had 10 contestants in the
Bow
Wow Bucks contest on May 19th, 2007. Those contestants
turned in over $350 in vote money
that
has already been added to the Dog Park Fund total.
CONGRATULATIONS
to
St. Patrek & Allison Peters!!!
