DESCRIPTION:Do you live near a stream or creek? Did you know that typical landscaping practices could actually harm rivers and creeks? Most people that live by water resources like to remove all the landscape for a clear view. Why not\, if you live near the water you want to see it! Much like with gardening\, living around water brings a sense of calm and relaxation. Landscaping around a waterway with lawn and mowing all the way to the banks increases stormwater runoff amounts. This runoff carries fertilizer\, pesticides\, sediments\, and pet waste from lawns directly into waterways\, polluting the aquatic environment. Landscaping to the water also increases bank erosion\, increases the potential for flood damage\, and decreases the available habitat for wildlife. Scenic natural views are eventually lost as well. \nOne easy way to stabilize a streambank is to use livestakes. These are cuttings of woody shrubs and trees. They have the ability to grow roots within six months. Learn how to install along creekbanks properly by watching live on Facebook. \nThis year for Forsyth Creek Week\, Clemmons and Kernersville will provide buffer kits for free. Check the Creek Week website before you leave for the event. \nHenry Fansler with NC Sierra Club Foothills Club along with Town of Kernersville Public Services staff and one of our sponsors\, Blue Stream Environmental will lead a walk through the wetlands to learn more about our local frogs and toads. We will meet at the soccer field parking lot. Look for the giant dragonfly sign. \nThis year we’ll offer a frog walk at 4 p.m. families with kids\, and a 6 p.m. walk just for grown-ups. \nThe frog walks will begin with a brief presentation about the frogs and toads commonly found in the area\, their important role as predator and prey\, and as an indicator of water quality. We will learn to identify frogs and toads based on their calls and then see what frogs\, and maybe some toads\, make their homes in the park. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 19\, 4 p.m. (kids & families) & 6 p.m. (grown-ups)\nIvey Redmon Park\, 908 Beeson Road\, Kernersville MAP \nNOTE: This may be turned into a virtual event depending on status of the coronavirus pandemic in Forsyth County during Creek Week. Check the Creek Week website before you leave for the event. \nHenry Fansler with NC Sierra Club Foothills Club along with Town of Kernersville Public Services staff and one of our sponsors\, Blue Stream Environmental will lead a walk through the wetlands to learn more about our local frogs and toads. We will meet at the soccer field parking lot. Look for the giant dragonfly sign. \nThis year we’ll offer a frog walk at 4 p.m. families with kids\, and a 6 p.m. walk just for grown-ups. \nThe frog walks will begin with a brief presentation about the frogs and toads commonly found in the area\, their important role as predator and prey\, and as an indicator of water quality. We will learn to identify frogs and toads based on their calls and then see what frogs\, and maybe some toads\, make their homes in the park. A NC toad and frog call app is available at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.johneyboy.frogcalls&hl=en_US&gl=US. \nAnyone participating in this activity should be prepared for wet and muddy conditions and dress for the weather.
