The Community Development Department consists of the Development Services and Planning and Engineering divisions, which together provide services associated with planning and regulation of development in the Town.  Development Services is responsible for enforcement of the North Carolina State Building Code, as well as the Town of Kernersville Housing and Nuisance codes. Development Services also provides assistance to new and expanding businesses, including help obtaining permits and inspections.

Planning and Engineering is responsible for Long Range Planning, Civil Plan Review, Engineering Services, Watershed Regulation, Capital Improvement Projects, and Transportation Planning. This includes but is not limited to UDO and Comprehensive Plan maintenance, facilitation of the Development Review Committee, plat reviews, addressing, mapping and GIS, and stormwater inspections. Planning and Engineering also staffs the Planning Board, Board of Aldermen, Board of Adjustment, and Community Appearance Commission and represents the Town with the Winston-Salem Metropolitan Planning Organization.
