The primary functions of the Planning and Engineering Division are:
- Guiding the Town of Kernersville’s current and long-range planning efforts with the goal of ensuring high quality, unique development.
- Maintaining the integrity of the Town of Kernersville Unified Development Ordinance.
- Review of development submittals for Civil Plan and Stormwater compliance.
- Development review and recommendations to the Planning Board and Board of Aldermen on all matters pertaining to the future growth and development within Kernersville.

The Planning Board meets monthly to hear legislative and administrative cases requesting rezonings, UDO text amendments, and other administrative reviews.
The Board of Adjustment meets monthly to hear quasi-judicial matters which result in the issuance of Special Use Permits.

In many cases, this results in the expansion of water, sewer, or other essential infrastructure needed to support new areas of development.
