- Check the forecast regularly to see if you are at risk for severe weather. Listen to local news or a NOAA Weather Radio to stay informed about severe weather watches and warnings.
Build an Emergency Kit
- Water (1 gallon per person for 3-7 days)
- Food (3-day supply of non-perishable food)
- Special items for babies and the elderly
- Cell phone & charger
- Manual can opener, cooking tools & fuel
- Blankets & pillows
- Seasonal clothes & sturdy shoes
- First Aid Kit & prescription drugs
- Toiletries & hygiene items
- Disinfectant wipes
- Flashlights & extra batteries
- NOAA Weather radio & extra batteries
- Cash
- Important documents (in a waterproof bag)
- Filled vehicle fuel tanks
- Pet care items
Know Where to Take Shelter
- Have a safe place at home and work to seek shelter when severe weather threatens, such as a basement or interior room on the lowest floor with no windows.
- If you live in an area prone to flooding be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice. When a flood or flash flood warning is issued in for your area, head for higher ground. Preplan arrangements with your family, friends or neighbors in case you have to evacuate.
- Discuss and practice plans with your family/household.
